Angels For Sight |

Angels For Sight is a 501 © 3 non-profit
community based organization dedicated
and committed to providing free vision
eye screening, eye examinations and
glasses to uninsured, underserved
children and seniors who otherwise would
not have access to such services.
Soroptimist International of Bellflower
has committed to contribute both our
time and money to help this worthwhile
organization achieve their goal of
helping provide preventative vision care
services to those who would not normally
receive it. |

Soroptimist Village |
|
Soroptimist
Village is an attractive low-rent senior
citizen housing complex in Norwalk that
was built by Soroptimists in 1963. The
Village is supported and managed by 10
Soroptimists clubs, including
Soroptimist International of Bellflower
and is partially funded by the City of
Norwalk Housing Authority. Club
representatives serve on the Board of
Directors for the Village and our club
helps to host monthly birthday
celebrations and holiday parties for the
“Villagers”. |

Little House
|
|
Little
House is a drug and alcohol treatment
center for women that has been operating
successfully in Bellflower since 1952.
Soroptimist International of Bellflower
has supported Little House over the
years, not just financially, but also by
serving on its board of directors and
hosting the women of Little House at our
annual holiday party, where residents
join Soroptimist International of
Bellflower for a traditional holiday
banquet and enjoy a performance by the
Bellflower Elementary School Ensemble.
Residents of Little House are presented
with a Holiday gift bag filled with fun
and necessary items for them to use. For
many of them, this is the only Holiday
celebration they will have! |

Caring
Connections has been serving children
and families of the Bellflower Unified
School District for over 10 years now.
The members of Soroptimist International
of Bellflower share the commitment

Soroptimist
International of Bellflower supports
ARC, an organization that has been
serving people with developmental
disabilities since 1956. The local ARC,
located in Downey, currently serves an
overall population of approximately 250
people. |

Su Casa |
|
Su Casa is a
non-profit agency that works to end
domestic violence in our local
communities. Soroptimist International
of Bellflower has supported Su Casa
almost since its founding in 1979 both
financially and by having the women and
children of Su Casa join with us at our
annual holiday party, and enjoy a
holiday banquet and see a performance by
the Bellflower Elementary School
Ensemble. Then they are presented with a
holiday gift bag filled with fun and
necessary items for them to use. For
many of them, this is the only holiday
celebration they will have! |

Bellflower
Unified School District not only
provides quality education with
traditional programs, but also has a
Head Start Program, a Caring Connections
Program and a tutoring program.
Bellflower Unified school district is
proud to have Distinguished and Blue
Ribbon schools. Soroptimist
International of Bellflower works with
and through the School District to
provide a variety of scholarship
opportunities for young women going to
college. |

Bellflower Volunteer Center
|

The
Volunteer Center has been in operation
for over 10 years and gives
opportunities for youth to serve in
their communities wherever volunteers
are needed. The Center also coordinates
donations and applications for food and
other necessities during the holidays.

supports the Volunteer Center by helping
to contribute both financially and also
to the holiday food program. |

Los
Cerritos YMCA |
|
The local
YMCA is dedicated to building strong
kids, strong families and strong
communities. Over the years, Soroptimist
International of Bellflower has helped
the Los Cerritos YMCA purchase a van,
and helped pay for its insurance for
several years. Additionally, we have
sponsored children at the local summer
camp and we have supported the YMCA by
making donations and sponsorships to
their fund-raisers. |

Clifton M Brakensiek Library
|
|
The library
has served the community of Bellflower
for more than 80 years. Throughout the
years, Soroptimist International of
Bellflower has helped the library by
being a part of an adult literacy
program and more recently donated money
so the library could create a Teen
Reading Center. We continue to
donate money to the library so that they
can purchase books, and other resources
for the Teen Reading Center. |

Disaster Fund |
|
The funds
raised through voluntary contributions
by clubs within the Region are used to
help both Soroptimists within our Region
and in other Regions who have suffered
the effects of a natural disaster. |

Service Fund |
|
The money in
this fund is used to award Violet
Richardson and Women’s Opportunity
Awards at the Region level. Clubs make
voluntary donations to this fund so that
the Region can give monetary awards at
each Spring Conference. |

The Burden of Women’s Arthritis |
|
The Region’s focus for the next 2 years
is “The
Burden of Women’s Arthritis”.
Arthritis affects an estimated 46.4
million adults, of whom 61% (28.3
million) are women. There is an
immediate need to promote awareness of
arthritis to assist women to take
control of the quality of their lives
through early diagnosis, treatment and
education on how to lessen pain and
delay disability from this disease.
Soroptimist clubs of Camino Real Region
are encouraged to adopt the issue of
women’s arthritis so as to improve the
quality of life for women living with
arthritis. |

Project Independence: Women Survivors of
War |

This is a
four year project (2003 – 2007) that
partners with Women for Women
International. The project assists women
in the war torn countries of
Afghanistan, Bosnia and Rwanda to
rebuild their lives. We provide training
in vocational and leadership skills and
we give loans to establish
income-generating projects through
Micro-credit Lending Programs. To date,
we have raised almost $1 million for
this project. |

December 10th Appeal |
|
Every year on Human Right’s Day
(December 10th), the President of
Soroptimist International selects a
project that provides direct assistance
to women in extreme need. Past projects
have aided refugees in camps in
Malaysia; provided protection and help
for women AID sufferers in Uganda and
the Ukraine, scholarships for girls in
Mongolia and Rwanda; vocational training
programs and shelter for vulnerable
women and children in Paraguay and
education and nutrition for abandoned
children in Vietnam. |
